Criteria of the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous surgery for large kidney stones
The literature review presents the epidemiology of nephrolithiasis, discusses the available methods of its treatment for renal stone sizes 2 cm and more, compares their effectiveness and safety. Indications and principles of the most effective and safe surgical technique for treatment of large kidney stones – percutaneous nephrolithotripsy – are discussed in detail, emphasizing current innovations such as the use of small-diameter endoscopes, and also gives characteristics of the types of energy used in these endoscopes for stone fragmentation. Opinions of specialists about the effectiveness and safety of this type of surgery and about the ways to determine indications to choosing an endoscope’s diameter for endoscopic lithotripsy are offered for consideration. Simultaneously, the work outlines the clinical guidelines of expert councils of the European Association of Urology and American Urological Association for treatment of nephrolithiasis, where the issues of early (intraoperative and postoperative) and late complications of percutaneous nephrolithotripsy are reflected.
