Skin melanoma in children and adolescents of the Moscow region

Melanoma is a rare tumor in children. This report presents the clinical data and results of treatment of 27 children and adolescents (res idents of the Moscow region), aged 0 18 years (mean age at the moment of diagnosis 10 years), with histologically verified skin melanoma, for the period of 1990 2005. The boy/girl ratio was 1:1.5. The mean annual incidence of skin melanoma in children (0 14 years) was 0.1188±0.1176 per 100,000 children for the period of 1990 2005, in adolescents (15 18 years) 0.46±0.21 per 100,000 adolescents for the period of 2001 2005. The most incident location of the tumor were the limbs (12 (44%) patients). Sixteen (59.3%) of 27 patients are alive in remission, 2 (7.4%) alive with tumor, 1 (3.7%) patient died, and 8 (29.6%) patients were lost for follow up.
