Anaemias of chronic disease. Part 1. Normal iron homeostasis. Specificities of iron metabolism in anaemias of chronic disease

Iron is an essential trace element regulating vital metabolic processes in the body. Iron deficiency, and therefore, the subsequent development of anaemia worsen the quality of life and aggravate the severity of the «background» disease, worsening its prognosis. Therefore, it is so important for practical medicine to have a clear understanding of the mechanisms of ferrokinetics in the norm and in pathologies. In the recent years, science has achieved great successes in the understanding of the processes of iron homeostasis in the body, a number of proteins have been found to regulate iron metabolism. The first part of a literature review highlights the issues of normal iron metabolism and the pathogenetic mechanisms of the development of anaemia in various chronic diseases.
