Influence of a low-calorie diet with inclusion of a specialised food product with modified carbohydrate profile on the parameters of glycaemic variability in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2

Objective. Assessment of the parameters of glycaemic variability (GV) in patients with DM type 2 against the background of a low-calorie diet with inclusion of a specialised food product with modified carbohydrate profile.
Patients and methods. The study included 38 women with DM type 2 and obesity (BMI 38.1 ± 0.89 kg/m2) aged 37 to 69 years (55.2 ± 1.32 г.), who received standard sugar-reducing therapy. In all patients, we assessed GV with the use of a continuous glucose monitoring system for 6 days: 3 days against the background of a low-calorie diet (1500 kcal/day) and 3 days against the low-calorie intake with inclusion of a specialised food product (SFP) for dietetic (therapeutic) nutrition «Nurtien Diabetes». SFP was included in a low-calorie diet in the form of a beverage in the amount of 200 ml for a second breakfast instead of a carbohydrate-containing meal.
Results. Inclusion of SFP with modified carbohydrate profile in a low-calorie diet was associated with a statistically significant decrease of the maximal and moderate glycaemic levels, there was a clear tendency of maximal glycaemia to decrease and time spent in normoglycaemia to increase. In the majority of the examined patients (60%) throughout the whole period of observation the mean blood glucose values at daytime (11:45–14:45) and in the evening (17:45–20:45) were higher than
at night (0:00–6:59), which reflects a natural effect on meals on blood glucose levels.
Conclusions. Modification of a low-calorie diet by including SFP with modified carbohydrate profile promotes a decrease of certain GV parameters in patients with DM type.
