Professors of the Military Medical Academy Sergey Botkin and Nikolay Chistovich as founders of the Clinic of Infectious Diseases in Russia

The authors investigated the development of infectious diseases care in Russia. Analyzing various literature and information from archival sources, we demonstrated the role of S.P. Botkin’s students, Professors of the Military Medical Academy Sergey S. Botkin and Nikolay Ya. Chistovich in the development of this medical discipline and profession (creation of the first Department of Infectious Diseases and first scientific school of bacteriologists and infectious disease physicians; priority research). This article briefly describes the establishment of European bacteriology, immunology, and doctrine of infectious diseases. The approach to the biographical genre is based on the requirements of the social history of medicine: the main personalities are given not as bronze monuments, but as citizens, scientists, teachers, outstanding and highly moral individuals, and living people with their human weaknesses. The article contains multiple photos.
Key words: infectious diseases, history of medicine.
